Beth E. Brant

Beth E. Brant (Degonwadonti) (Mohawk,1941-2015) was one of the first lesbian-identifying Indigenous writers on Turtle Island. Her work revolves around themes of Indigeneity, sexuality, racism, and colonialism. She edited A Gathering of Spirit: A Collection by North American Indian Women (1988), the foundational anthology of writing by heterosexual and LBQ-identified Indigenous women. Her writing was her activism and helped blaze the trail for future Two Spirit and Indigiqueer organizers. She was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
