Full Circle Coffeehouse

Full Circle Coffeehouse

Full Circle Coffeehouse was a women-only coffeehouse that operated on Friday nights from 1974 to 1976 in the basement of the New School. It eventually moved to a storefront location at 7th Avenue and Main Street. According to co-owner Coral Arrand, Full Circle Coffehouse "was especially important, at that time, as a space where women (especially lesbians) could socialize in an environment that felt welcoming and safe." Lesbian folk singer Ferron, of CreeOjibwa and French Canadian ancestry, played there many times. Her music was and continues to be the soundtrack for many queer women's lives. Here we recreate an imagined scene by overlaying a recording of Ferron's music with the sound of women chatting.
