Haley Steinhilber

Nancy Tucker is a 72-year-old lesbian woman currently living in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her partner, Lynn. She came out in Washington, D.C. in the late 1960s and was active in many gay organizations, such as the Mattachine Society, the Gay Women’s Alternative, the Gay Blade, the Gay Liberation Front, and gay addiction recovery groups. In this interview, Tucker describes her perception of butch/femme identities and her involvement in the DC gay and lesbian community from 1969 to 1992, when she moved to San Francisco, California.

Madeline Stoltz recently graduated from George Washington University in May 2018. She is originally from Sacramento, California and moved to Washington, D.C. to complete her undergraduate degree in political communications. She identifies as a queer and femme, particularly in the bisexual/pansexual community. In this interview, Madeline talks about her experiences after moving to D.C., coming out, family, dating, queer identities, and her perception of butch/femme identities.

Ty Ginter is a 23-year-old graduate student studying historic preservation at University of Maryland, College Park and they identify as a non-binary butch lesbian. In this interview, Ty talks about their dissertation project in Washington, D.C. called D.C. Dykaries, navigating the D.C. older lesbian community, their definition and relationship to the butch identity, their 5-year relationship, the need for (sober) lesbian spaces, and family life.
